Captain Steven Sabo - Be a Better Policeman - Plan Ahead

Captain Steven Sabo did not get to retire uninjured after several years of service as a police officer out of sheer luck. His success on the street was the result of proper planning and preparation, as well as good training and experience. A good policeman is someone who is always thinking about the next step, who has a good plan. As the old adage says, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail,” something that is especially true for police officers. That is why if a policeman wants to become better at their job, they need to focus on coming up with a plan every time they go out on the street for a call.

Planning properly can mean the difference between success and failure for many people in life, but for a police officer, it can be the difference between life and death. That is why an officer should always focus on a few key things before going out on a call. The first thing an officer should focus on is the mission. They should ask themselves what is the goal? What is the officer hoping to accomplish by going out? Once this has been figured out, an officer needs to come up with a good strategy of execution in order to accomplish this goal. It is important that this execution method is practical and safe, but that it still accomplished the goal. Just a bit of preparation can save an officer from many problems that may have arisen otherwise.

Captain Steven Sabo worked for many years as a police officer, learning that planning was an essential part of the job.
